Belfast Trust Heart Procedure Concerns: Your Rights and What to Do Next

What Has Happened?

The Belfast Health and Social Care Trust have acknowledged concerns relating to cardiac (heart) procedures and has apologised to patients who may have been affected. The concerns centre on whether certain procedures were clinically necessary in the first place. As a result, the Trust has undertaken a recall exercise, contacting patients whose treatment falls within the scope of its review so that their care can be independently assessed.

A recall of this nature does not automatically mean that any individual patient has been harmed. It is a precautionary step designed to ensure that every affected patient’s treatment is properly reviewed and that any necessary follow-up care is provided. Nonetheless, for patients who underwent an invasive procedure they may not have needed, the news is understandably distressing.

What Might This Mean for Affected Patients?

For some patients, a review may provide reassurance that their treatment was appropriate. For others, it may confirm that they underwent a procedure that was unnecessary, or that their care fell below the standard they were entitled to expect. An unnecessary invasive cardiac procedure can carry real consequences, including physical harm, complications, and significant psychological distress.

Where a patient has suffered harm as a result of treatment that was not clinically justified, they may be entitled to bring a clinical negligence claim.
